HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TEACHER!

I am going to celebrate my birthday with my second form students. It is an idea I thought of a few years ago, when I started celebrating it with my private students at home if my birthday was on a weekday; later I realized it was a good project for this first part of the year, when students do not have the books yet.

I told them about my party some weeks ago now, so we started preparing the basic vocabulary: balloons, present, cake, candle, card… We drew and coloured them.

We have also been preparing “presents”: they are some cards students have made without my supervision. Of course, they had to draw the cards and write the greeting in English; they have kept the cards in a box I will not open until we are at the party.  Students have worked all on their own, not to spoil the surprise.

We have also practiced the “Happy Birthday!” song, and some of the games we are going to play during my forty-minute party. (I only have a one-period class!)

This project helps me revise some interesting structures for students, since they like the subject. “How old are you?” “I’m 7” and –since I turn much more than 7 years old- I have also taught 40, the same number they are working on with their Spanish teacher.

That day we are going to share greetings, songs and a cake, we are going to play some of our favourite games (after all, this will not be a typical class, it will be a party) and I even have a suggestion from my coordinator I might follow: we are allowed to film the party and upload it to the school web site.

As we usually say in the English department of this school, our students’ interests come first. We are careful to plan our subjects according to what they enjoy learning, because we do believe that is the best way of teaching.

¡Feliz Cumpleaños, seño!

Voy a festejar mi cumpleaños con los alumnos de 2do. Es una idea que se me ocurrió hace ya algunos años, cuando empecé a festejarlo si caía en día de semana con los alumnos particulares que tenía en casa; después me di cuenta de que era un buen mini-proyecto para esta primera parte del año en la que aún no todos tienen los libros.
Ya hace unas semanas que les comenté de mi cumple, así que empezamos por preparar el vocabulario básico: globos, regalo, torta, vela, tarjeta… Los dibujamos y los pintaremos.

También estuvimos haciendo los regalos: son unas tarjetas que prepararon sin que yo las viera. Claro que tuvieron que dibujarlas y escribirme el saludo -todo en inglés- y las guardaron en una caja que no abriré hasta la fiesta. Trabajaron solitos, para no arruinar mi sorpresa
También practicamos “Happy Birthday” y algunos de los juegos que vamos a jugar durante mi fiesta de 40 minutos (¡¡sólo tengo un período!!)

Este proyecto me ayuda a repasar una estructura interesante para ellos, porque el tema les gusta:¿Cuántos años tenés? Tengo 7 años y -como yo cumplo mucho más de 7- les enseñé el 40, en coincidencia con el tema que están viendo con su maestra en matemáticas.

Ese día, compartiremos saludos, canción y torta, haremos algunos de nuestros juegos favoritos (después de todo, esta no será una clase típica, será una fiesta) y hasta tengo una propuesta de mi coordinadora para filmarnos y subir el vídeo a la página del colegio, que tal vez acepte.
En fin, como solemos hacer en el departamento de inglés de la escuela, priorizamos los intereses de los alumnos y elaboramos los contenidos de la lengua a partir de lo que a ellos les gusta aprender, porque creemos que esa es la mejor manera de enseñar.
